Radio locked after too many wrong codes – what to do

After a few wrong codes, most radios block code entry and show LOCKED, SAFE, WAIT or a countdown. Leave the radio switched on with the ignition on until the message disappears – usually up to an hour – then enter the correct code once.

Common lockout messages

Display Typical meaning What to do
LOCKED / LOCKED 10 (Ford) Too many wrong codes Leave the radio on with the ignition on until it shows CODE again
SAFE (VW group, Audi) Waiting for the code, or blocked Leave the radio on (often about 1 hour) until SAFE changes to the code prompt
WAIT / countdown Timer running Wait until the timer ends
OFF or –– Blocked Leave the radio on; check the manual for the exact time

Step by step

  1. Stop entering codes. Each wrong try can make the waiting time longer.
  2. Check the serial. Most wrong codes come from a misread serial or the wrong calculator – read the label again.
  3. Keep the radio powered. Turn the ignition to the accessory position (or run the engine to protect the battery) and leave the radio switched on.
  4. Wait for the code prompt. When the display asks for the code again, enter it once, carefully.

If the correct code still does not work, send us the serial – some radios need a different calculator variant.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a car radio stay locked?

It depends on the maker and on how many wrong codes were entered. Many radios need 30 to 60 minutes with the radio on; some double the waiting time after each wrong code.

Can a locked radio be reset by disconnecting the battery?

Usually not. Most radios remember the lockout, and some restart the timer when they lose power. Keep the radio powered until the lock clears.

My radio is permanently locked. Can it be fixed?

Some radios lock permanently after too many attempts and need a specialist to reset them. Contact our team with the radio details.
